Phrases/Words that are different:

  • ken (けん)for “because”
  • yaken (やけん)is used instead of dakara (だから)
  • akan (あかん)for useless/no good/hopeless (Sanuki dialect)
  • azuru (あずる)for trouble/pain/worry (Sanuki dialect)
  • oru(おる)replaces iru(いる)as the verb “to be”
  • this leads to two alternate forms of  ~te iru (~ている)
  • Example: なにしてるの?(What are you doing?) becomes either なにしとるの or なにしょるの.
  • dekinai (できない)becomes yo sen (ようせん)
  • ga (が) replaces no (の) in some contexts.

Some of the vocabulary is understandable for standard Japanese speakers, but some of it is so different, it can cause significant confusion.

  • Example: “Move your desk (つくえをかいて)in Shikoku dialect would be interpreted as “draw a desk” or “scratch your desk” by a standard Japanese speaker.

The Shikoku Dialect (Shikoku hogen) consists of a group of dialects spoken in Shikoku. The dialects are:

  • Awa, Tokushima Dialect
  • Sanuki Dialect
  • Iyo Dialect
  • Tosa, Kochi Dialect

The Shikoku dialect has many similarities with the Chugoku dialect in grammar. The biggest difference between those two is in pitch accent. Shikoku dialect uses Kyoto-Osaka-type accent , but Chugoku uses a more Tokyo-type accent.
